What is financing a car?

In a nutshell, car finance is a way of paying for the car you drive, as you drive it.

There are loads of car financing deals you can choose from, each tailored to your needs. If you want the option to own your car at the end of the term, there are car leasing agreements which will  offer this. If, however, you’re happy to lease eternally (and after all, why wouldn’t you be?), this can easily be arranged as well.

Who is my car finance agreement with?

When you lease a car through Just Drive, surely that’s who you’ll take your finance agreement out with? Actually, no. We like to keep things simple around here which is why we are just the Broker in the process of Vehicle Leasing between the Finance Company and the Supplying Dealer of the vehicle.

Your contract is actually taken out with Arval, HITACHI, Alphabet or any one of the FCA-regulated finance companies we work with. By working with the big guns of car financing, you can rest assured that your car lease is entirely secure.

If you want the option to own the car you’re driving…

PCP car finance

It’s easy to confuse PCP — or personal contract purchase — with PCH (personal contract hire), another popular car financing option.

With both PCH and PCP agreements, your finance company will own your vehicle throughout the lease. However, with PCP car finance you can simply hand the car back but you also have the option to buy your car outright at the end of the lease with a balloon payment set at the beginning of the agreement. In which you could then sell or part exchange.

Lease Purchase (Business User HP)

If you’d like to own your vehicle, but are finding it tough to secure the funds, Lease Purchase could be for you.

As with all leasing deals, you’ll pay an initial deposit followed by monthly payments which are worked out based around the retail value and depreciation value of your car, plus interest.

Unlike other lease-to-buy financing deals, you do have to purchase your vehicle at the end of the lease. But, once that’s done, there’ll be no more payments. You can however sell at anytime during the agreement, you don’t have to stay in your contract for the entire time.

PCH car finance (Personal Contract Hire)

When you think of Personal Leasing, you probably imagine something like this.

Like PCP, with PCH car financing you’re just hiring a car for a contracted length of time.  At the end of the lease, the vehicle is handed back to the finance company. Damage charges and excess mileages may apply.

Finance Lease

Although you never take ownership of your vehicle, Finance Leasing can provide you with a little extra cash at the end of your lease.

Here’s how it works: At the end of the finance lease contract, the Finance company will provide you with a balloon payment to make this extra money if the residual value of your vehicle if more than the Balloon Payment you will make some money from it. Usually, this means that the vehicle is sold and a proportion of the proceeds of the sale are returned to the lessee.

Finally, Business Contract Hire (CH)

This is largely the same as PCH, however the contract is put through a company.

The only real difference is if it is a VAT Registered Limited Company, they are able to claim a portion of VAT back. (50% of the VAT Element on cars and 100% of the VAT Element on Commercial Vehicles).

The company can also offset the initial payment and monthly rentals based on the co2 emissions against their Corporation Tax.

First, what does part exchange mean?

In a nutshell, part exchange allows you to secure a better price for your new vehicle simply by trading in your old one.

It’s generally used by dealerships as a way of making your new car more affordable. They’ll come up with a quote for your old vehicle, based on its current value and condition, and you’ll then be able to put that money towards an initial payment with the finance company.

Why do we have number plates?

We’ve had number plates on cars in the UK since 1904. They were introduced to easily identify vehicles involved in accidents and track down lawbreakers.

The style of the new 69 plate has been on new cars since 2001 and must follow these guidelines:

• DVLA number plates are rectangular and Mandatory – both legally and the name of the specific typeface that’s used.
• The plate on the front is always white and the rear is yellow.
• The law says you must display license plates, unless you’re the reigning monarch on official business.

Netflix and YouTube streaming in Tesla

Elon Musk recently tweeted that soon, Netflix and YouTube streaming would be an added feature for Tesla screens. Your car must have reached a complete stop and you must be in a WiFi hotspot for the technology to work (so no binge-watching old Friends episodes on the move, please).

In a tweet, the Tesla founder maintained that his electric cars “have an amazingly immersive, cinematic feel due to the comfy seats & surround sound audio” making entertainment streaming the next obvious step for the model’s in-car technology.

Electric cars are fast becoming the vehicle of choice for UK drivers. Although it’s still early days, the number of drivers opting for electric has doubled in recent years. The commitment by leading car manufacturers to stop producing non-electric models has only bolstered demand. Volvo

If you’re looking to find one of the world’s safest car brands, look no further than Volvo – specifically, the Volvo XC90.

In 2018 the Volvo XC90 was crowned the safest car, with no road deaths in 16 years, thanks to its fleet of high-tech safety systems, like automatic braking. Considering the Volvo XC90 launched in 2002, this gives it an immaculate safety record. So much so, Thatcham Research even went as far as to name it the safest vehicle ever tested.

Volvo was the first manufacturer to develop Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), which automatically applies the car’s brakes in order to prevent collisions. Mercedes-Benz

The Mercedes A-Class also has a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating and was 2018’s safest small family car, scoring a whopping 96%.

What do we have to say? It’s German and engineered to perfection and one of the most stylish cars on the road (we’ll take one in Cosmos Black, please). For starters, Lane Assist, Active Bonnet and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) systems for cyclists, pedestrians and city driving are all standard features across the A-Class, giving it some of the best safety features in modern cars.

The G-Class and E-Class also rank highly for car safety, making Mercedes-Benz a huge contender for one of the world’s safest car brands.

BMW

Another testament to German engineering is the Bavarian powerhouse, BMW; specifically the X5. In 2019, the X5 was given a complete overhaul, with focus on an even more stylish interior that provides a luxury driving experience for all passengers. However, the overhaul really comes into its own when it comes to its car safety features.

The BMW X5 ranks highly for its impressive fleet of safety features – that includes the new Backup Assistant parking system, automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist, which are all among the range’s standard features now.

Much-loved among BMW drivers is the executive GT 6 Series, which also receives a solid 5-star NCAP rating, as does the ever-popular 1 Series.

Volkswagen

The Volkswagen Polo is a firm favourite among youngsters. Firstly, the name Volkswagen goes hand-in-hand with quality, reliability and style. Secondly, parents of new drivers can sleep soundly because the Polo is one of the safest cars for new drivers out there.

An article in Auto Express highlights the Polo’s overall NCAP score of 96% in the Adult Occupant protection category. NCAP test in four key areas; adult protection, child protection, pedestrian protection and safety assist. While scores for child, pedestrian and safety assist were 85%, 76% and 59% respectively, they’re still high for the class, making this one of the safest cars to drive for youngsters.
